Freedom School

Here is where you can find out more about GRAD Academy Memphis’s CDF Freedom Schools© summer program.

CDF Freedom Schools© will begin summer 2016. The program will run for six weeks between June 20th and July 29th and focuses on literacy and providing scholars with reading materials for the entire summer. The program also teaches scholars about the history of the Civil Rights Movement and Memphis community. Scholars also enjoy various field trips around the city throughout the program.

The Summer 2016 overview and schedule will be available soon.

You can find sample program details and a sample daily schedule here.

GRAD Academy Memphis participates in the CDF Freedom Schools© program each year, a summer program started in the early 1990’s. Supported by the Children’s Defense Fund, these free summer schools are modeled after the 1964 Freedom Schools created during the Civil Rights Movement as a tool to organize and educate communities.

Enrollment is open to current 8th graders who anticipate enrolling at GRAD Academy Memphis for the 2016-2017 school year. There are limited spots available for this summer’s Freedom School, and those who enroll in CDF Freedom Schools© program are automatically enrolled at GRAD Academy Memphis for the upcoming school year.

If interested in enrolling, contact Larissa Gregory, Dean of Students at (901) 206-8848 or click here for the enrollment packet.
