GRAD Academy Memphis is part of the Achievement School District (ASD) of Tennessee, a statewide district that aims to move schools performing in the bottom 5% in Tennessee to the top 25% within five years. GRAD Academy opened in 2013‐2014 with a 9th grade class. The school now serves students in grades 9 through 12.
Instruction at GRAD Academy Memphis is based on the New Tech Network model, a project‐based learning approach supported by a comprehensive technology platform. Through New Tech, GRAD Academy faculty are part of a nationwide network of educators who are demonstrating that students can meet challenging academic standards through hands‐on engagement with meaningful, locally relevant questions and problems.

GRAD Academy Memphis enrolls scholars in accordance with T.C.A. 49-13-106 (a) (2), and has established and defined its own priority groups, listed below in order of enrollment preference:
- Scholars with current, legal residence in an ASD school’s attendance area
- Non-attendance area scholars who attended an ASD school prior to its transformation, including open enrollment and optional transfers
- Scholars with current, legal residence in another ASD attendance area
All scholars enrolled at GRAD Academy Memphis must be zoned to a priority school.
